About IPL Retention and it’s Rules:
To the day of Indian Premier League(IPL) retention, The teams has to decide 6 Players from the current players, that they want to retain in their team for the next upcoming season. And the team has to release the other players for the auction. Franchises can select a combination of direct retention or can opt for Right to Match(RTM) card.
The new retention rules allows each franchise to retain five capped players and two uncapped ones. However, franchises can retain only six players, either through direct retention or RTM.
IPL 2025 New Price Slabs for Retention:
The purse of an IPL Franchise is Rs. 120 Crore.
- First three capped players cost: INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore and INR 11 crore.
- Two additional capped players cost: INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore.
- Uncapped retention cost: INR 4 crore
So, if an IPL franchise chooses to retain five capped players, it will cost them 75 crore, and one uncapped player will go for Rs 4 crore. KL Rahul set to be released from LSG?
Lucknow Super Giants(LSG) are set to retain Nicholas Pooran, Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, along with, uncapped players Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni for IPL 2025. However, KL Rahul, who has captained the franchise since 2022, is unlikely to be retained unless a last-minute change occurs. Pooran expected to be the top retention with Rs. 18 crore, Second retention will be Mayank Yadav with Rs. 14 crore, and Third retention will be Ravi Bishnoi with Rs. 11 crore. Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni as uncapped players will get Rs. 4-4 crore. In this condition, the total retention will deduct Rs. 51 crore from the total purse of Lucknow Super Giants(LSG) which is Rs. 120 crore.

Dhoni Hints at playing IPL 2025 for CSK:
Former India and Chennai Super Kings(CSK) skipper MS Dhoni has hinted a possible return for IPL 2025, he wants to “enjoy the last few years of cricket”. What are The New Rules?
The IPL 2025 season comes with some updated rules that will shape how teams operate:
- Retention Rules: Each team can retain up to six players. These can be a mix of capped (international) and uncapped (domestic) players. A maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players can be retained. Retentions can be done either through direct retention or by using a Right to Match (RTM) card during the auction.
- Auction Purse: The auction budget for each team has been increased to INR 120 crore (approx. USD 14.3 million), up from INR 100 crore in previous seasons.
- Impact Player Rule: This rule, introduced in 2023, allows teams to substitute a player mid-game. It will continue to be part of the IPL until at least 2027.
- Match Fees: From IPL 2025, players will receive an additional match fee of INR 7.5 lakh per match on top of their auction salaries.
- Right to Match (RTM): The RTM card allows teams to match the highest bid for a player they had previously released during the auction. Teams get one RTM card for each unused retention slot.
